Arts

The Arts community at JWB is thriving and growing! JWB has many clubs that cater specially to the Arts, including Creating A Scene, Concert Band, Senior Choir, Junior Band, Primary Choir and much much more!

JWB’s arts scene showed their hard work and practice at the Remembrance Day Ceremony this month, with several incredible performances from all around the school!

Concert Band showed up, as always, playing “O Canada” and “Fortitude” which they’ve been practicing every morning for three months!

Senior Choir was there too, singing “Hands Of Peace” beautifully as well.

Many other clubs performed as well, and don’t forget special shows done by classes or individuals, like the Last Post and Reveille, or the play set up by the Grade 8 French kids.

As we continue to go into December, there’s not a moment to waste for the Arts Clubs of JWB! Concert Band, Senior Choir, Junior Band and Primary Choir continue practicing for the Winter Concert (it will definitely be a spectacle) and we can’t wait to see what Creating A Scene will come up with next!

Here’s to the Arts scene at JWB!

Sports

Our school is well into both of our girls and boys senior volleyball seasons! Both teams have decided to participate in the competitive volleyball leagues, the teams packed with amazing players.

This month in particular, our school has competed against various schools, such as Alexander’s, Florence Meares, and Rolling Meadows, playing on average 2 games per week.

Both teams have gotten back into the rhythm of volleyball and all the games have been super intense. Plenty of support from the school has been given, both teachers and students attending the games when they take place at our school, demonstrating great school spirit. The girls team fought hard but, in the end did not make it further into the competitive Halton competition.

Leadership

This month, our school’s initiative was a Me to We event called “We are Silent”. This event took place on the 19th, many of the older students participating in this event. This year, to show a better understanding of the event, to be able to participate, a student would have to write on a big piece of paper, in the front foyer, the reason as to why they were silent for a day. “We are Silent” is a global movement that is for all the children and people who do not have a voice. In our country we have the power of freedom of speech but, this is not the case in all countries, therefore this event was made to be able to bring awareness to this cause, speaking out for those without a voice.

Learning

Many changes will come with the leap into the intermediate division, as students begin to mature. Rotary, Geo/HIstory and more opportunities are just the tip of the iceberg for grade 7 students. One thing that the 7’s have been working on for the past month in D&T is bridge building. Just as with the Science LAB’s earlier in the year, this is a new experience for the new intermediates. Of course, with a new experience comes new difficulties. As the intermediates continue to mature; learning collaboration and teamwork are essential fundamental life skill. Sometimes, ideas will clash and arguments may arise, but in the end all will turn out fine. In the last two weeks of November, the bridge testing begun.. A total of 105 pounds was to be put on a bridge in different stages. To the surprise of many, most bridges managed to hold all of the weight! If a bridge survived, then it was to be smashed with a hammer…. no bridge will survive! Some bridges took 1, 2, 3 and even 5 hits before they were destroyed! The grade 7’s definitely enjoyed working on this project and look forward to more of D&T assignments in the future.

Giving back

At the peak of October and start of November JWB was giving back to the local community in a big way. The We Scare Hunger Food Drive is an annual food drive held at our school around Halloween. The aim of the food drive is that while kids at our school prepare to celebrate Halloween, other less fortunate members of our community don’t go hungry. This year, our school raised 4,359 cans, far surpassing our goal of 3000. We also offered prizes for the top 3 classes that donated the most cans. At 529 Mr. Henderson’s class took first place, with Mrs. Tomlinson’s class coming in second and Mlle Louli’s class coming in third. The food drive was a huge success and the Leadership and Me to We teams are very proud of our school. Way to go, JWB!

Special Events

November is always an exciting month, and our biggest event this month was the Remembrance Day Ceremony! Remembrance Day is a solemn occasion, to celebrate the lives of our fallen, and still living, soldiers who fought for our freedom and rights. From the art on the wall that included poppies, crosses, and much more, to the Last Post and Reveille, to the play done by the Grade 8 French Immersion Class, JWB payed a very nice tribute to Remembrance Day. The remembrance day event covered many areas, from Drama, to Music and the Arts, and showcased off many of JWB’s most talented people!

What a ceremony, JWB! The students, from Kindergarten to Grade 8 demonstrated their respect by staying completely silent and withholding their applause too. We can’t wait for our next Special Event - it will definitely be just as spectacular as this one!

Next up In December, our main special event of the month is the Winter Concert.
