April 2016

Arts

Last month, the intermediates embarked on a new project in music. The grade 7 and 8’s were tasked with creating a GarageBand composition in music class using loops and musical typing. Both of the grades had to create a piece that corresponded with something: the 7’s with a painting and the 8’s with a movie trailer. In the case of the 7’s they were assessed on how well their songs went with the painting. For the 8’s, students were assessed on how well they were able to create a trailer with music and voiceovers based on their films. Students were given the option of choosing their partners and their paintings/movies. We know they worked hard all March and April. Way to go!

Sports

April was the debut of a new organised sport, tchoukball. Though the season only lasts for one month, they are keeping busy by having multiple practices a week. Tchoukball is a high intensity, tactical invasion territory game with 12 players on the team, with 5 on the field at a time. The students put their skills to the test by playing against their coaches and though there are mixed results it is suspected that the students won, though the teachers will refuse to admit their defeat. To end off the season there is a boardwide tournament happening at the end of the month. We wish our team the best of luck, go Jags!

Leadership

This month JWB celebrated random acts of kindness with an assembly organised by the Leadership and both Jr. and Sr. Eco-Club teams. Through intuitive skits and songs, there was something for everyone, these presentations being done by students in grade 1 all the way to grade 8, with our intermediate students as emcee’s. The school learned about how random acts of kindness apply to both our peers and our environment. Let’s continue to be positive for the last few months JWB!

Learning

In April here at our school, the kindergartners had fun learning about dinosaurs and prehistoric life. They learned about the species and how they lived millions of years ago. In Mrs. Horn’s class, a Jurrasic World was set up, with plants, volcanoes and models of dinosaurs to really make it seem alive. The young students really enjoyed this activity and learning about the ancient animals.

Giving Back

JWB is always looking for new ways to give back to the community, and this month was no exception. Blue bags and garbage bags covered the entire mural and stone bench in the lobby, all filled with clothes. Students looked in their closets and asked their friends and families through the month of April. Hundreds of clothes are in those bags, ready to be donated to charity and those who need it.

However, the even better part is that it’s a win-win deal. The Bag 2 School organisation donates the hundreds of clothes to needy people, and in return, the school receives $200 dollars for every single ton of clothes donated.

Our clothes then go to developing countries who need affordable clothing. As for our school, the money raised will go to purchasing a school sign for JWB.

Special Events

There never seems to be a lack of exciting events going on at JWB, and April is no exception! Thursday, April 21st was an eventful night as teachers from our school took over the North Boston Pizza on Dundas from 5pm to 7pm to act as servers! The line stretched far out the front door and every table was booked full as students, families (and some poor unsuspecting diners) showed up for a fun night out.

To add onto that, some of the proceeds actually were sent back to the school for improving on our own school!
