January 2016

Arts

Everyone is Special

For the Arts at JWB, the Primaries stole the limelight in January with their “Everyone is Special” project. The kids were invited to draw a piece of artwork with no restrictions - whatever they wanted with a wide variety of materials - pipe cleaners, paint, paper, markers, pencil crayons - and the entire Primary Division showed off their art pieces at the Everyone is Different assembly at the end of the month.

Sports

January was a busy month for us in terms of sports. The badminton team, Senior basketball and junior volleyball are all hard at work in their games and tournaments. These teams are formidable and we should be proud. Milena Dubajic and Paige Lucas were named the girls Halton Badminton Champions. The boys volleyball team has won their tournament. The girls volleyball team came third. Our school is so talented, and we are so proud of our sports teams! Way to go, JWB!

Leadership

In the month of January, the student leadership team decided to take things slow as December was quite a busy month with plenty of fundraisers. With some research, it was found that January was a month that was used to celebrate everyone’s differences. From this, an event at our school, titled “Everyone is Different” was created. Each class made a presentation that was presented at the end of the month that highlighted the students’ differences. Poems and books were read, some with plays that were presented through the reading. A great mashup of songs were sung and there was a grand array of art that decorated the gym and that were presented. Pieces were made by all grades, from kindergarten to the intermediates. Finally there were 2 videos that were presented, one made by the student leadership team and another made by the grade 8’s, showcasing the many talents of our graduating students.

Learning

January was quite a hands on month for the students of JWB, many projects were created and displayed throughout the school. The grade 3 classes have been learning about structures and tested their knowledge by creating straw structures. In addition to that, the grade 6’s have started their space unit and created spectacular art projects that have been showcased in the halls. They were given the option to either do a visual representation of a star constellation or the solar system. The students went above and beyond and made amazing projects, creatively using the resources they had access to, to create stand out dioramas of our solar system.

Giving Back

This month at JWB, we gave plenty back to our community. One of our initiatives was the “Battery Drive”. Hundreds of batteries, used, were donated to our school. But for what purpose? The batteries contain zinc, a component in batteries to make them work that the human body also uses to work. The zinc will be given to poorer countries who need it in order to make medicine and vitamins.

Yet another initiative done in this month was the “Pop Tab Collection” - pop tabs were collected around the school. The pop tabs will be sold as scrap metal and the money will go towards a wheelchair - just another example of JWB giving back!

Special Events

This month at JWB, we have had many special events. To start off with, we had a special government visitor for our grade 5 students. The grade 5’s really enjoyed this visitor and the experience to see someone like this. Since they are learning about government in their social studies unit, this is a great experience.

Next, we had our “everybody is different” assembly. This was a great event to mark how JWB is including to people no matter their skin colour, culture, language or interests. Also, at this assembly, our student of excellence was announced. Congratulations to Esha Pisharody! You have made a great contribution to our school and are a role model for us all.
